In an ESL fifth grade class, students tend to struggle to find words to make their writing and speaking more descriptive. Their vocabulary is not expanding that much as the school year advances. I would like my students to retain more words and be able to explain their definitions and incorporate them into their speech and writing. The key problem lies in the pedagogy. The activities I have chosen for the students in the past do not aid in the growth of their vocabulary. I would like to acquire a set of iPads for the class along with 3 apps. The use of iPads in the classroom will facilitate collaborative work and develop students‘ vocabulary learning. Some of the activities intended to be done are the making of short videos, where students exemplify a verb, making concept maps in which students include synonyms and antonyms of the words, and collages showing images that they themselves take or find on the internet showing the definition of the word. These projects are to be shared with the classroom so as to be able to hold a discussion of their choices which would include making observations and giving advice as to what else they could have shown or included to better define a word. The integration of technology enables the thoughtful defining of a word, but most importantly it allows students to have ownership of a new word. It supports the vocabulary instruction. The assessment method I chose is classroom observation.
